Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 9, 2026
The short version: Musing runs locally on your device by default, and the extension ships no analytics. The extension sends nothing to any server we operate. If you enable the optional Smart Reasons feature with your own API key, short conversation-derived text goes directly from your browser to the AI provider you chose — and only then. This website (musing.wiki) uses privacy-focused, cookieless analytics, and stores your email only if you choose to join our waitlist.
Our Privacy Commitment
Musing was built with privacy as a core principle, not an afterthought. We believe personalization shouldn't require surveillance. By default, everything Musing does happens entirely on your device; the only exception is the optional Smart Reasons feature described below, which you must explicitly enable with your own API key.
What Data We Access
Musing reads conversation text from AI chat platforms (Claude, ChatGPT, and Google Gemini) that you visit. This access is used solely to extract themes and interests for matching quotes.
- Conversation snippets: Short excerpts from your AI conversations (max 2,000 characters each)
- Extracted themes: Topics like "programming," "creativity," or "career" identified from your conversations
- User preferences: Your settings such as enabled platforms and display options
How Your Data Is Processed
By default, all processing happens locally in your browser:
- Theme extraction uses local keyword matching
- Quote matching happens on-device using a bundled database
- The extension sends no data to servers we operate — we have none that receive user data
- The extension contains no analytics, tracking pixels, or third-party scripts
Optional Smart Reasons (Bring Your Own Key)
Musing offers an optional Smart Reasons feature that explains why a quote was chosen for you. It is off by default and only works if you add your own API key for a supported AI provider: Groq, Anthropic, or OpenAI.
- What is sent: the selected quote plus short conversation-derived text (themes and brief snippets) used to generate the explanation
- Where it goes: directly from your browser to the provider you chose (api.groq.com, api.anthropic.com, or api.openai.com) — no server of ours sits in between
- When: only after you enable Smart Reasons and enter your own API key; disabling it stops all external requests
- Your key: stored locally in your browser and used only for these requests
- Provider handling: data sent to your chosen provider is processed under that provider's own privacy policy
Where Your Data Is Stored
All data is stored in your browser's local storage (chrome.storage.local):
- Data stays on your device only
- Data is not synced to your Google account
- Data is automatically deleted when you uninstall the extension
- Data is sandboxed and inaccessible to other extensions or websites
Data Security
Musing implements several security measures:
- Content Security Policy: Prevents execution of any external scripts
- Input sanitization: Removes emails, URLs with tokens, API keys, and phone numbers before processing
- Extension isolation: Your data cannot be accessed by other extensions
Your Control
You have full control over your data:
- Toggle data sources: Enable or disable collection from specific platforms in settings
- Clear data: Delete all stored data anytime via the extension popup
- Uninstall: Removing the extension deletes all associated data
What We Don't Do
- We don't operate any servers that receive data from the extension
- We don't put analytics or tracking in the extension
- We don't sell or share any information
- We don't store your full conversations — only brief snippets for theme extraction
- We don't require an account or login
- We don't send anything to AI providers unless you enable Smart Reasons with your own key
Website Analytics
This website (musing.wiki) uses privacy-focused analytics — Umami and Cloudflare Web Analytics — to understand aggregate usage. Umami loads directly from Umami Cloud (umami.is) and reports to its collector; Cloudflare Web Analytics runs at the network edge. Both are cookieless, collect only aggregate, anonymized usage data, and do not build visitor profiles. They run on this website only; the extension itself contains no analytics.
Website Waitlist
If you choose to join our launch waitlist on this website, we store the email address you submit, along with the request time and browser user-agent string, so we can notify you when Musing launches. We use it for that purpose only. We do not sell or share it. This is optional and separate from the extension, which stores no email and operates no waitlist.
Changes to This Policy
If we make changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above. For significant changes, we will notify users through the extension.
